Aspens, Rock Creek

I took a three-day jaunt to Bishop, California on the weekend of October 19 with my brother Doug and cousin Mike. We were looking for some fall color and enjoying the fall mountain scenery. The fall colors were most vivid along Rock Creek, south of Tom's Place on US 395.

Little Lakes Basin

Above Rock Creek lies the Little Lakes Basin, one of a few areas along the east side of the Sierra Nevada where high alpine scenery is accessible via a short stroll--in this case, about a mile from the car up a well-travelled path. The 10,300 foot altitude does take a little getting used to, though. This is a view of the south end of Mack Lake from granite bluff above the lake.

Mt. Emerson, Morning Light

Telephoto view of Mt. Emerson from Buttermilk Road, near Bishop, California. We were a bit surprised by the forest of tents and campers near here, until I remebered that this is prime bouldering country. As we drove back to town a little later in the morning the rocks and boulders near here were thick with climbers.

Mt. Tom from Sherwin Summit

Mt. Tom (13,786 feet) is the monumental pyramid on the right, and is the dominant presence in the northern Ownes Valley near Rovanna. This view is from the top of the Sherwin Grade near Tom's Place.

This photo was taken in May, 2005. This was an unusually snowy year for the Sierra and many of the high southern passes didn't open til the fourth of July.

Bear Creek Spire, Mt. Dade, and Mt. Abbot

In the center of the picture is Treasure peak. This view from Mono Pass, with rain clouds building by fits and starts overt the eastern slope of the Sierra. The occasional rain showers were very welcome this day, with temperatures over 70 degrees at 11,000 feet.
